stay safe this halloween

stay safe this halloween

Woof! Skippy the dog and my human Roz would like to wish all the children (and the fancy dress loving adults) in Wicklow a great fun halloween night and hope you get more treats than tricks!!

As any of my bebo readers know I love halloween but the loud bangs and fireworks do scare me. Its in my blood to be afraid of loud bangs!! Check out www.skippythedog.bebo.com to see what I’m talking about!!

So just keep an eye on your pet and make sure he or she is safe and knows that your there to take care of them.

Once again, have great fun everyone – we’re visiting our lovely neices and making Toffee Apples!!

And here’s our Halloween Gallery Ho Ho Ho…

Here’s the recipe:
makes 6 small apples:

you need:
225g (8oz) vanilla sugar
110ml (4fl oz ) water
half teaspoon white wine vinegar
2 tablespoons golden syrup
6 small desert apples
6 wooden skewers or lolly sticks (art shop wicklow town or beside centra)

Method:

  • Dissolve the sugar in the water over a medium heat.
  • Once it has dissolved, stir in the vinegar and syrup. bring to the boil and cook without stirring until it reaches the hard crack stage or hardens into a ball when dropped in cold water. -DONT PUT FINGER IN _ WILL GET BADLY BURNT!!

it should take about 10 minutes.

  • While the syrup is cooking pierce each apple with a wooden stick.
  • Once the toffee is ready dip each apple into the hot toffee, turning itt around in the syrup to ensure is fully coated.
  • Leave to harden on a lightly oiled tray before serving.

These will last a day or two if wrapped in cellophane and if I am not around to eat them all!!

Woof”! I know its almost winter but the autumnal colors to be seen at the moment are breathtaking. we all headed up to Avondale house in Rathdrum Co Wicklow- home of Charles Stuart Parnell, today for a brisk walk and a visit to the playground today. The sun was shining though weather was crisp and by golly it really felt like Christmas! But we forgot the camera so apologies for the lack of images- such is life!

My human and her relations had great fun swinging on the swings ( she really is too old for that! ah then again maybe thats why she feels so young eh?) and she threw the ball for me to fetch which was great fun altogether.

I got bombarded by kids who asked if I lick? ha ha so I gave them a lick and then they threw a stick for me – good times.

Avondale ( it really is one of wicklows’ lesser known jewels) is open until 8pm with car parking facilites and lots of gorgeous walks. check out our page on rathdrum for more information – click here >>>

Woof! I am delighted to hear that dear old gentle giant Monty the St Bernard won top prize as overall dog at the recent RDS show in Dublin.

Too sexy for my fur! Well done Monty!

Too sexy for my fur! Well done Monty!

Monty came from the same place (Sharpeshill near deputys pass wicklow) as my very good friend Snipe - a fabuously handsome Springer, and all this goes to prove that many of these poorly treated and often unwanted dogs make wonderful pets and companions.

Well done to Monty and to his human Katina Koumarianous who gave him the love he needed to be king again! Its humans like you katina, Michael (snipes human) and my human Roz that make my tail wag!

On Saturday we headed off to Glendalough Co Wicklow for the deer walk

Mateja and Marco enjoyed the Deer walk with Roz and Skippy

Mateja and Marco enjoyed the Deer walk with Roz and Skippy

It was a gorgeous day and myself(skippy) my human and two of her mates all met up at the information office where we were told the direction ot take to get to the telescopes that had been set up by the rangers. We walked along the lake with many tourists’ legs confusing me soo much that I started following the wrong pair and thankfully my human saw me disappearing and called me back in time!

We met Dave the mouintain ranger who told us all about the deer and the new problem that the chinese deer pose to the herd. He thought I was very cute and gave me a pat. I liked him very much! We could see a whole herd of deer  very close  up through the telescopes and I saw a big Stag. Oh I felt so small!

We walked for 4 hours!

We walked for 4 hours!

Upon the boys’ advice we walked the whole ring which made me very very very tired!! But all in all it was a lovely day and lots of laughter was had by all.   I will have my new video up this week.

Thanks dave, thanks everyone at Glendalough for the fun deer walk.

See our photos below of the day and also our video will be up tomorrow on the main sites ‘Skippys Youtube videos ‘page (click here >>>)

Without wanting to freak anyone out I just wanted to paste this small piece of advice given to all females using taxis whether in Dub, Wicklow or Wexford to be careful after an unfortunate incident that occured recently – So here’s some simple saftey tips:

“So please please if you get a taxi always make sure someone looks in to have a good look at the driver, make sure there is nobody in the back seat, make a phone call or pretend to say to someone on the phone you will be home or at the restaurant or “meet me at the whatever in 10 mins” etc and always tell someone when you have made it home safe.”

Sound advice,

Christopher & Conor helped out at laragh Car Boot Sale

Christopher & Conor helped out at laragh Car Boot Sale

Last sunday we all trooped down to the car boot sale in The Brockagh Resource Centres‘ car park in Laragh - near Glendalough. This is my favourite place for markets as it has a nice vibe about it, lots of tourists and the closeness to Glendalough ensures that you can throw in a lovely lake walk for good measure.

Just a quick note here though that I haven’t forgotten Christopher and Conor who were very busy helping their folks to sell the contents of their boot at the market, and Sam, Leah and Abi who just loved being there!!

We have some fun videos which will be up before the week is out- watch this space!

p.s. the Christmas Craft Fair held here annually s gorgeous and I highly recommend planning ahed to go to it- I will put up the date asa p.

Saturday 18th October 2008 Deer Walk in Glendalough

Giving you plenty of time to plan the day!

Telescopes will be set up between 11am and 4pm with guides on hand to chat and answer your questions about the glens’ famous deer. Call into the information office for directions to the telescopes, this is a small change from previous years where guides used to escort you- however, just wear appropriate clothing and bring a warm drink and food. Its lots of fun and I intend to be there!!
But do bear in mind that it’s rutting season so don’t get too close to a Stag!!

Walk for Irish Heart Foundation Oct5th

Here’s a review of Sundays walk from Terry of Hilltop Treks. Well done to everyone who took part!

“The walk went very well. We were blessed with the weather on Sunday after Saturday’s downpour.
The ground was a bit wet and soggy under foot but this didn’t bother people’s spirits too much. There was 12 of us in all and a dog called Lee.
We started in Crone wood and followed a path going straight and then taking a right turn over a small bridge. Here we crossed a small stile and followed a stone wall up along the edge of
a wood deep into the Raven’s Glen.

When we reached the high point of the wall we then took a left and walked up straight onto Tonduff South, the views from here were fantastic views looking out as far as Bray and the surrounding mountains.
We then walked onto Tonduff north and Maulin. The sky was very clear and stopped for a bit of lunch and could sit comfortably in our t-shirts. We could see a lot of walkers on Djouce.

We then followed the Wicklow way trail back down along the edge of Powerscourt Waterfall and through Crone Wood back to our cars.
Overall it was a great day enjoyed by all and a lot more healthy hearts as well.

Sounds like it was fun- nice pics too. Hopefully we’ll make it next time- Skippy and Rosa
