Arklow Co Wicklow

Visiting Arklow:

I just LOVE when I get the chance to have a wander round Arklow town in Wicklow especially down at the quays where the myriad of smells is heaven to my super-sniffing nose!

Arklow is one of Wicklows’ main seaside towns with a picturesque harbour for fishing and leisure vessels. It is accessible either by driving along the scenic coastal road from Wicklow (being a dog I like to stick my head out the window so my ears get blown right back!) or along the speedy N11 ‘motorway’ straight from Dublin (heading South) or from Wexford (heading North).

South beach in arklow is a nice sandy beach with a small car parking area which is particularly nice for sunbathing or strolling along ,maybe a game of Frisbee (oh yes pleeeease..) on a warm afternoon.

North beach is also ideal for dog walking (hint hint) though there may be a bit of climbing over headlands involved. It is a well known spot for sea angling though and enjoys regular fishing competitions and visits from local wicklow fishing clubs.

Nearby is the Arklow caravan Park (with the Arklow bay hotel in the background) which has a nice pond at which kids can enjoy feeding the ducks, geese and swans and me while you have a flask of tea at the benches dotted around the area.

There is also a nice riverside walk along by the nineteen arches bridge up along the back of Kittys restaurant. I must admit to being a little wary of the many geese that hang out here though as they are a bigger than me and sometimes honk at me thinking I have bread for them, but I have no pockets to carry bread in!!! silly geese!

Arklow County Wicklow has one particular outlet that no other towns in Wicklow have.. Shh, it’s that guilty pleasure known as Mc Donalds!!! Oh how my little paws look so tiny when I’m holding a Big Mac – mmmm, I am salivating already, and a strawberry milkshake!

There are so many shopping outlets in Arklow co Wicklow that it is hard to know where to begin. let’s see: Of course the new bridgewater centre in Arklow now long open has over 40 shopping outlets to choose from and a multi screen cinema to enjoy movies in. Wicklow cinema days are back hurrah! F-A-B Baby!

There is an Arts gallery (paintings) and Arts centre (exhibitions, classes.) both along the main street, many beauty salons including Jennys beauty salon (she’s very nice!) and Bella Mia (Michelle here is also very nice!) where you can get yourself groomed and beautiful!!

A really cute craftshop - Wicklow Vale Emporium, selling gorgeous delph, crockery, ceramics, glassware and the teeniest ornamental shoes you ever did see (didn’t fit even me!!).

Fresh fish can be bought in the carpark alongside Kittys restaurant off the main street from the well known travelling kilmore-quay caught fish-van every Friday from 9.30am-4pm. Come early though as is very popular, (Just follow the seagulls)!

Arklow Co Wicklow also boasts a 24 hour Tesco (selling clothes also), Lidl, Pettits now known as Centra. There are numerous little cafes for gourmet Wicklow sandwiches and/or the old reliable soup and a sambo!

Festival wise Arklow hosts the Carlsberg Summer Breeze festival which features a weekend of singing competitions and singing pubs events taking place in the sunny month of June.

Wicklow Golf enthusiasts can check out the acclaimed golf course at arklow golf club with fabulous ocean views whilst children can enjoy the operational model of the wheelhouse controls of a trawler at the Arklow maritime museum.
