Celebrate James Joyce

Our Friends At The Pavilion theatre – just a 30 min drive from wicklow, have sent us an update on their upcoming productions in celebration of James Joyce and Blooms day see below:

Cove Productions in association with Focus Theatre presents
THE TOWER by Joe Joyce
Starring Tom Hickey as James Joyce
and Bosco Hogan as Oliver St. John Gogarty

Joyce and Gogarty were close friends in the year leading up to Joyce’s departure from Dublin into self-imposed exile in 1904. The friendship disintegrated into long-term enmity after a celebrated falling out in the Martello Tower in Sandycove which involved a nightmarish black panther and a real gun and formed the backdrop to the opening chapter of Ulysses.

The Tower brings them back to Sandycove in the present day, as they look back on their friendship, their art, and their lives with humour, insight – and more than a century of hindsight. This production was a sell out success in Bewley’s Café Theatre last summer.

“Elegant, well-observed, genuinely witty, and above all, intelligent. . . . an offering of quite extraordinary quality.”
- Emer O’Kelly, Sunday Independent

Full Moon Wicklow walk Pics

Stephen Marsh was the photographer on our recent full moon walk in Glendalough with Hilltoptreks.ie.

They have posted pics of the evening up on flickr which you can view here.  They give a great overall sense of the atmosphere and the journey. Hilltop treks organise many walks in daytime and evenings including the popular yoga walks where you do yoga in the morning ( usually in the Brockagh resource centre) and then head to the hills as such in nearby beautiful glendalough – one of Irelands biggest tourist attractions.

Check out their photos on flickr here >>>

Their website here: www.hilltoptreks.ie

and again they are holding a singles walk next week or so – click here for details >>>

A friend of ours has asked for a little help in finding  a possible tenant for the following near Gorey Wexford:

Hi, I am sending out ‘feelers ‘ to see if any one would be interested in renting a chalet type building with enough land around it to grow your own veg. Min lease a year.

The chalet is not yet erected and will only be dependant on interest so I guess you would have to be able to wait for at least a month for it to be built!

The location is very nice, quiet area so you will need a car , but there is parking and the gorgeous sandy beach of morriscastle is only a 10 min drive. gorey town is also 10 min and wexford town is 30 min drive.

You would be better off if you like dogs as, besides my little fella, there are 2 other dogs that live on the road and like to pop by for a visit – they are friendly dogs.

Basically I am looking to do something with this half acre area that can create income and thus I am also open to suggestions. so maybe someone out there is looking to rent ( for eg) a place to play piano/ paint/ whatever… lets talk…

note re wheelchair access- as the place has yet to be erected this could be planned out no prob.

re internet- i have satellite internet and thus you should be able to get wireless from it too. also (dependant on feedback)I am looking into requirements for ehb allowance as I have nothing against it personally so do mail and i will update with any news.

would really suit any age person who is into gardening, dogs, countryside living…

Email us here at office@thewicklowway.ie or fill in our form ( if your in a net cafe) here if your interested or indeed if you have any suggestions as to what he could do.

Walk in Glendalough great fun

skippy-glendalough-wicklow.jpgSo Skippy and myself headed off last night to Glendalough visitor centre in Wicklow which was the meeting point for the full moon walk organised by Terry and the boys at hilltop treks. Thankfully, unlike todays horrid weather, it was a nice night with enough of a breeze to keep the sweat off.

At least thats’ what we thought until about halfway up the mountain when yours truly discovered how hot she was getting. Upon the advice of James King the sweeper ( stays at the backto ensure no-one gets left behind) I cut down my layers of clothing as otherwise I was prone to catching a chill whenever we stopped for a break.

I got chatting to lots of the people, there were about 25 people in total, some from Wicklow, some from Dubllin, some from France, some knew each other, some came alone, but by the time we had our break overlooking the upper Glendalough lake everyone was relaxed and chatting casually.

glendalough-wicklow-large.jpg3 dogs accompanied us on our Wicklow Walking trip, Skippy, Sparky and Lizzie. The less about Sparkys dash for freedom the better methinks!!

Hilariously I met folks that I knew from my teenage years which was a bit of a laugh and all in all everyone had a great time. James was telling me that Terry and the lads are thinking of organising a wicklow camping trip. If so heres your first booking guys!!

Highly recommended walks with www.hilltoptreks.com.

Photos coming soon courtesy of Terry and his photographer – whose name i have yet to get but I will of course!  In the meantime here’s what I managed to take before my battery died!

The Park Restaurant Arklow Review

Located directly beside the carpark in Arklow that is situated opposite the Arklow dole office / garda station etc sits the impressive and inviting looking  Restaurant that is The Park.

Myself and a friend finally got a chance to check it out for lunch the other day and boy oh boy are we glad we did! Anyone who reguarly reads our blog will know how much I adore food and the use of interesting tastes and blends etc. ( well with 2 chefs in the family its not surprising I guess) .

Anyway we literally were in and out as had a busy day but from the moment we walked in to The Park an air of calm decended upon us.

We sat ( having been offered a few choice tables)  in the wonderfully muted and cooling room (HOT day!) that is the restaurant and were immediately offered a drink of our choice or perhaps just water?

Which is always nice as some folks feel awkward asking for regular water.

The menu had a fine range of light and savoury sandwiches ( the fancy kind) salads, stir fry type dishes to offer and myself and my mate both opted for the sizzling beef with pakchoi and stir fried veg  and shared a bowl of homecut chips- Forgive me if the exact ingredients are incorrect as I was in a slight hurry but it was truly GORGEOUS food!!  Beautiful zings of lemon and honey and neither too little or too much on the plate.

Maybe its a girl thing but the state of a restaurants’ toilet facitlites really matter to me ( and pubs – oh some pub toilets are sooo bad in Wicklow!!) and I am pleased to report that they are clean and pleasant in The Park Restaurant.

I just had a small cappucino afterwards which was very nice too and then unfortunatley we had to zoom on to our next port of call!

Being located literally by the car park is very convenient for meeting up with friends and we will definately be back again. Highly recommended for a nice lunch.

Total cost approx 27 euro altogether.  A bit pricey maybe for lunch but very very tasty and worth it – I had been thinking about that dish for 2 days afterwards! honestly.

Breakfast 10am to 12pm Tuesday to Saturday
