Wicklow Way walk Roundwood to Glendalough

We have just uploaded the photos from our wicklow way walk last Saturday ( yesterday) which you can view by clicking here >>>

The hilltop treks walk took us approx 4 and a half hours including a half hour break for lunch in a gorgeous secluded spot where mother nature had handily left us a long bench in the form of a fallen tree.! (Hi Dave, Hi Kev…)

The wicklow walk was easy going and we had beautiful weather for it.

A BIG THANK YOU to Terry from Hilltop treks for organising the walk and to James our guide.

And hey, Terry and Angela we wish you a fantastic wedding day this November  ~ Congratulations

We then met up with some of the singles walk that Terry had organised for that day also ( see guinness note below!) and would like to take this opportunity to shout out a BIG HELLO to Gwen and Louisa.

Gwen promises to send us info on great walks round Paris and so on, so we are really looking forward to keeping updated on that!

Unfortunately the following days’ walk was cancelled, ( Guinness etc) tho yours truly was up and ready as you can see by my post below, so…

…I took my own advice and instead had a lovley walk in Avondale Forest Park ( Rathdrum)and um.. a go on the swings ( just MAKES you giggle) followed by coffee, eggs and bacon in Simply Bates Cafe at the coffin shed ( yum! and really busy – see pics below) and frankly had a great day hanging out in the area and just chillin’..

pics not showing? click here >>>

Have a great week and remember, if you have an event or notice you would like people to see then Contact us or just email it in to us at office@thewicklowway.ie

Car boot Sale today ( Sunday ) in Rathdrum

well, am up with the lark this sunday morning as am doing the second leg of our wicklow way walk with terry and gang from hilltop treks. (There’s still time if you get there before 11am) whom I am meeting at 11am a The Glendalough hotel, which incidentally could do with a bit of a refurbishment in my personal opinion…( Lynhams of laragh has gorgeous hotel accommodation just a 10 minute stroll from Glendalough so if your looking for a  Glendalough Hotel this is one we recommend – tell them we sent you!) We are then walking to Glenmalure over the rolling wicklow hills and boggy gounds- oooh the fun!

Alas, poor little skippy is not able for the big Wicklow hikes now but he is with us in spirit (as he is taken for a run on the beach instead by my better half!)

Antywayz, I was up in Rathdrum earlier getting my papers etc in Lily cahills shop ( opens around 8.30am!) and I noticed the cars already unpacking their wares and treasures in the main carpark at the top of the town.

So if your looking for some way to spend the day in Wicklow today, why not pop up to picturesque Rathdrum and have a stroll around the Car Boot Sale, enjoy a fantastic wooden walk by the river in Avondale ( 5 euro parking) or drive to the famous Glendalough ( 15 min, parking charge at upper lake carpark- about 4 euro) and then treat yourself to a gorgeous meal in Bates Restaurant?..

Well, gotta go stretch before this walk – am a little stiff from yestersdays one from Roundwood to Glendalough- It was lovely though- such a great way to spend the day. I will post photos and more details of the walk tonite.

ciau for now,

Roz and Skippy the dog ( in spirit)

New non-profit store launched in Glenealy

oooobyThe launch of the new “OOOOBY ” store in Glenealy village, Co. Wicklow on Saturday 12th September, opened the season for a new alternative store.

OOOOBY stands for Out Of Our Own Back Yard.

The non-profit store, located in the Glenealy Landscape Centre, was created by Carraig Dúlra, a local organic teaching farm that runs a variety of workshops and courses for people interested in learning natural living skills.

The opening was a success, with people from around Co Wicklow showing up and local vendors presenting their own products.

The store has a variety of sustainable and fair trade products, and highlights the importance of local economy, fairtrade and environmentally sustainable products.

A key aim of the store is to enforce the links between consumers and local producers, and to raise awareness about food issues from field to plate.

The OOOOBY store is not just a place to shop, it is also a community space, where people can meet over coffee, exchange information and share skills in a relaxed atmosphere, while supporting the local economy.

OOOOBY is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 5, and from 11.30 to 3.30 on Saturdays.

On Saturdays, local producers are there to answer questions about their produce, while other Saturday lunchtime activities will include demonstrations and talks.

Members of the community who would like to give a talk, demo or bring their local products should contact the store.

More information and an on-line catalogue are available on the website www.dulra.org/catalog.

You can also contact the store by emailing info@dulra.org
or on (0404) 69570.

International Space Station Sighted

Some of you may remember that back in September 2008 we ( skippy and I ) thought we had seen a spaceship hurtling across the midnight skies as a blaze of orange streaked above our heads- scarily we were playing a certain David Bowie track at the time so you can imagine the effect was startling to say the least!

well, one of our Wicklow Way readers has reported seeing the ISS again last night- so get outside and if you notice something amazingly unusual in the skies give the boys a wave and say HI!

Our reader writes:
Hi, I saw iss last night.failed to see it tonight due to cloud cover in charleville. my daughter in cork did see it for a few seconds before it disappeared
