Wicklow Rocks….again!

wwartsThe 2nd annual Wicklow Rocks Battle of the Bands has been officially launched and the search is on for the hottest act in Wicklow!

There was no shortage of talent in 2009 making the task of judging a difficult call but the triumph in the end went to young local band “Furion”.

There’s a great prize on offer this year with Hideout Records generously sponsoring studio recording time and as an additional prize the winners will also get the opportunity to have a professional photo shoot.

All teenage bands and singer/songwriters are invited to enter by emailing a short demo in any format to info@wicklowartsfestival.ie before the closing date of 17th May.

There are limited slots available for the gig so luckily members of popular local band Bocs Social will be on hand to help choose the contestants.

The Battle will be taking place during the Wicklow Arts Festival at the end of May and all details of the event are on the website www.wicklowartsfestival.ie.

BEALTAINE CELEBRATIONS COME TO WICKLOW TOWN

wwartsOver the last few years, the month of May has become known as a time to celebrate creativity in older people with projects and events taking place nationwide coordinated by the organisation ‘Age and Opportunity’.

Wicklow Town will be no exception and as a part of this year’s Bealtaine festival a number of special events are planned to take place during the Wicklow Arts Festival towards the end of the month.

“I’ll live til I die” is a touring production, featuring Wicklow based performers, that celebrates the life of Delia Murphy, a renowned balladeer of the 1930s and 40s.

Through story, talk and song the show gives an insight into the background of Delia, her role in giving the Irish ballad international recognition and an opportunity to sing along to songs she made famous such as ‘The Spinning Wheel’ and ‘If I were a blackbird’.

The show takes place on 27th May.

An intergenerational workshop ‘Poetry for all’ is planned for Saturday 29th May with experienced teacher and award winning poet, Nell Regan.

For Grannies and grandsons, Aunties and nieces- young and old are invited to team up with a member of the family from another generation for a fun creative writing session.

On 27th May Wicklow Film Club and Access Cinema present a Bealtaine screening of ‘Dean Spanley’ in the Grand Hotel. Starring Peter O’Toole and Sam Neill and described as ‘eccentric and amusing’, all are welcome to come along and enjoy the cinema experience.

This will be the Film Club’s last show for the season, so keep an eye out for next year’s membership news.

For full details on these and other events look up www.wicklowartsfestival.ie or www.bealtaine.com

There will be makeovers (Azure), hair-styling (Halfords), floral demos (Elle), catering (Phelim Byrne), wedding and spa arrangements (Amber Springs Hotel), jewellery (Whitemores) and much more!
