Local Woman Grainne Mc Loughlin Promoting Co Wicklow

glendalough-2010
  • Can you offer any information that you might have regarding your community that might be of interest – no matter how small?
  • Or indeed hi-res photographs of County Wicklow that can be used for the submission and/or presentation?

In 2008 Greystones won 1st Place and the gold award at the World LivCom Awards as the most livable community with a population under 20,000 people.

Grainne Mc Loughlin initiated the application and put together the submission that got her & two others to the finals in Dongguan in China.

Once again, Grainne is going for Gold and this year has put forward the whole County of Wicklow (Under the category of communities under 150,000 People) for the World LivCom awards.

The submission is now under way and Grainne is collating a vast amount of information pertaining to the following categories:

  1. Enhancement of the Natural & Built Landscapes
  2. Arts Culture & Heritage
  3. Environmental Best Practices
  4. Community Participation and Empowerment
  5. Healthy Lifestyles
  6. Strategic Planning

The initial submission is judged by three judges and following that, an interim decision on whether the application will be a finalist will take place.  Decisions on this is decided by the end of August.

If following the interim judging process, Wicklow is selected as a finalist in the LivCom Awards, a 40 minute presentation will be made at the finals in Chicago in November.

In addition, Grainne has also nominated the East Coast Nature Reserve in Newcastle for a Project Award and also a Bursary award (value at 10,000euro) for the “outdoor Classroom” Project at the East Coast Neature Reserve.

At this stage, Grainne welcomes any information that you might have regarding your community that might be of interest – no matter how small and she is also looking for hi-res photographs that can be used for the submission and/or presentation.

Grainne stated…” I firmly believe that Wicklow is a beautiful under estimated county and we do not appreciate enough the huge amount of community involvement and positive things that are going on, particularly at a time when everything is doom and Gloom. For once, I want us to celebrate the positives of where we live….”

We here at The Wicklow Way of Living Couldn’t agree with you more Grainne!

Wicklow Town Location for Sailfest launch

sailfestThe Wicklow Round Ireland Sail Fest 2010 officially launched the upcoming festival last night in the wicklow town hall.

Attended by many of Wicklow Counties’ finest business people the launch proved a great success.

Sponsored by Conway Media, the Wicklow Round Ireland Sailfest Programme looks very enticing with lots of great family friendly entertainment on the cards!

I personally am looking forward to the Mardi Gras ball- after all how often does one get a superb backdrop like the Wicklow Gaol to party in?

Conway Media Sponsor the Wicklow Round Ireland Sailfest

Wicklow Town and County is a great place to live in and visit – whether it be for a day or a month , and this point was referred to again by Roy Conway himself who had great praise for all the hard work that Emily Cox and all the volunteer staff of the sailfest have put into making this event known and well attended.

Wicklow Towns major Irene Winters has also worked hard to help promote the event and has even donated her office space and equipment for the event!

With plans to promote the Wicklow Round Ireland Sailfest using all types of media including and ad campaign on TV3, An Interview with Pat Kenny and Online via ourselves The Wicklow Way Websites, this exciting environmentally friendly outdoor event looks set to be a real community builder, something we here at The Wicklow way of living feel strongly about!

Some of this years Yacht race entrants inc such big names as Daft.ie one of whoms’ member is partaking in the event with the ever so slight disadvantage of being Blind – best of luck to you  Mark Pollack!!

The Wicklow Sailing Club have learnt lots of tips from the success of the Galway Event last year and were given a presentation by those involved which has helped them focus and plan for this Wicklow Event. Go the East Coast!!!

Lastly we would like to send a shoutout to the Blue Dolphin Special Olympics Team who are competing in Limerick between the 9 – 13 June as part of the Eastern Region and we wish all those involved the very best of luck and more importantly a wonderful time and experience.

Well Done to you all!!

FREE FAMILY ARTS FESTIVAL EVENTS

wwartsIt’s not long now until the annual Wicklow Arts Festival gets underway with an array of great events that the whole family can enjoy.

The festivities begin on Thursday 27th May when the local secondary schools will be opening their ‘Recycling Art Project’ in Wicklow Town County Buildings, a result of months of hard work by students and art teachers.

With the support of the Co. Wicklow Environmental Office and Arts Office, the students have taken the festival’s theme of ‘Sustainability’ and created a fantastic variety of artworks.

Everyone is welcome to the opening.

The theme continues with a story time and plant a seed session in the library followed later by readings of the shortlisted entries to the Young Writers Poetry Competition.

The winner will be decided by popular vote on the night, so make sure to come along and vote for your favourite. The competition is still open, so any budding writers still have time to send in their poems.

Another competition winner will also be announced when the WOW Design A Logo winning entry will be unveiled at An Tairseach Ecology Centre where all entries will be on display.

A great way for the older and younger generation to get together and get creative is the ‘Poetry for All’ workshop and for some outdoor fun drop in to the Community Garden.

Bachelors Walk will be a hive of activity when the festival tent hosts the art workshop with RTE’s Don Conroy and the puppet show ‘The Chinese Princess and the Cricket’ plus there will also be circus fun, ongoing crafts and lots of tasty treats at the market.

Other festival events feature a kids film club, chalk art attack and sand sculpture at Brittas Bay to name a few.

For teenagers , Eco-Unesco will be hosting two workshops and there’ll be a chance to see up and coming performers vying for top prize in the Battle of the Bands.

To find out more about all the activities, pick up a programme or look up the website www.wicklowartsfestival.ie.

Be part of the Art!
