WICKLOW SAILFEST 18th JUNE TO 20th JUNE 2010

Our Wicklow Way Writer and Artist Helen Pullen writes some news on the upcoming Sailfest in Wicklow Town:

I am getting geared up again to go out on the railings around the Halpin Memorial in Wicklow Town to join in the festivities for the Sailfest which is being run over the weekend 18th to 20th June.  I am hoping first of all that the weather is good, that lots of other artists turn out and for good sales – in that order!

I am hoping that my journey down the main street on my way to the railings will be as interesting as it was when I took part in the Arts Festival a few weekends ago.

I had to stop at the pedestrian crossing to let a very large lady cross, yea I know that is not very PC but she was large, she was all of 8 feet!  The fact that she was on stilts might have had something to do with it.  As we drove further down into the town we met a man on a wobbly bike, nothing strange there I hear you mutter!

The events for the Sailfest look exciting and I am especially looking forward to watching the yachts set sail from the harbour at 12 noon on Sunday.  I will be there hopping up and down with my camera!

~Helen

Check out the Sailfest events here

The Drifters play int eh Abbey car park next Saturday ( that’s especially for you David lol)

We would also like to wish every success to Tivoli and the Pride of Wicklow crew members (13) all aged between 19 & 21 all from Wicklow who have chartered a yacht  to sail around Ireland in the Round Ireland Race on 20th June. Well done guys and girls!!

Great Places to Eat in Wicklow Town

Last night I met up with some friends in Wicklow  Towns new Cafe / Restaurant:
World Wide Kitchen ( WWK) .

A relaxing friendly place that seats 20 people WWK Wicklow offers a gorgeous tasty menu where you can have a something small or large and a nice bottle of wine too! For example myself and my friend shared a Mixed Board of Cheese, Salami and Ham (€9.50), and some freshly baked Olive Bread ( €3.75) washed down with a nice chilled bottle of the House White wine , total bill was under 35 euro for the two of us – not bad eh?

The food was gorgeous with really nice meats and cheeses and a lovely bit of salad leaves and dressing in the middle to dip the bread into.

I am told that the local wicklow teenagers are also mad about this place with many of them stopping by for take aways of wraps, fish and chips, Pasta dishes, Pork ribs and more!

They also serve Delicious Irish Made Mauds Ice Cream. In fact the ethos behind World Wide Kitchen is a very admirable one – They keep it Local!

They source their meats from Cullens Butchers ( Wicklow), Wine from The Wicklow Wine Company, Vegetables from Woodroofes (Wicklow) and Italian produce from Italicatessan in Newtown (Wicklow). Well done guys!

They are open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner ( and soon breakfast) plus they deliver to the following places ( at an extra charge):

  • wwkWicklow Town
  • Rathnew
  • Blainroe
  • Ashford
  • Glenealy
  • Brittas Bay
  • Barndarrig
  • Newtown

Located at The Mall on Main Street, you can contact World Wide Kitchen ( WWK) on 0404 61710.

Muddy matches Singles Adventure Activity Weekend 19 & 20 June

muddy-matchesMany of you will be familiar with the online dating site www.muddymatches.co.uk with whom we had a wonderful muddy event last year in Glendalough. Well they’re at it again. This time the event is taking place a little further south in the kingdom of Kerry with our friend Nathan Kingerlee of outdoors Ireland.

I will pass it over to the girls here to let you know all about the fun packed weekend for singles that all you single wicklow people would be crazy to miss!!

  • Do you have a sense of adventure?
  • Do you enjoy the countryside?
  • Are you free on the 19th and 20th June?

If you answered yes to any of the above, you should consider our Activity Weekend in Killarney.

Starting on Saturday morning, you will be greeted by highly experienced and qualified guides before setting off to hike the high peak of Mangerton, past the icy waters of the Devil’s Punch Bowl, contouring around the impressive cliffs of the Horse’s Glen and overlooking both Dingle Bay and Kenmare Bay. On route enjoy a healthy picnic lunch as you look across Killarney National Park. Arguably some of the most impressive scenery Ireland has to offer.

On Saturday evening, enjoy a meal in the restaurant of the Randles Court Hotel, where you will be staying, whilst sharing stories and jokes from your day. There will also be the opportunity to head into Killarney after dinner to soak up some of the local atmosphere.

Sunday will be more relaxed where you spend the morning kayaking on the beautiful waters of the lakes of Killarney before concluding the weekend with refreshments at the hotel.

The weekend promises to be great fun and a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the National Park.

Tickets cost just £250 , which based on the current exchange rate is approx €299 (although this is always changing so I’d recommend you check with your bank before booking your place), and include all of your activities operated by qualified instructors, accommodation and food (drinks are at your own expense). A full list of what’s included can be found online .

The event is only two weeks away, so I’d recommend that you book as soon as possible to ensure you don’t miss out as places are limited.

InHouse Beauty Mobile Beauty Therapist Rathdrum Co Wicklow

Katherine Martin of InHouse Beauty Rathdrum offered to give me eyelash extensions. as she reckoned they’d “look amazing” on me! As someone with quite long eyelashes anyway, it was not something I had considered before- But I was up for “looking amazing” lol, So on Wednesday evening I headed up to inhousebeauty.com in Rathdrum Co Wicklow ( although normally Katherine will go to you so you can have the experience in the comfort of your own home / holiday home/ mobile home etc..) to try it out.

Katherine first ran through the do’s and don’ts of eyelash extension care then proceeded to talk me through the experience. I was relieved to discover that there is no pain involved, however It should be noted that the procedure is time consuming as she is basically adding an eyelash extension to each single eyelash you have – so a timeline of 2 hours is the norm.

We chatted away during the procedure and I was interested to learn of her pamper parties that she has been holding.

These are aimed at any groups of over 6 people from early teens upwards and can involve treatments such as

  • glitter makeup,
  • pedicures,
  • manicures,
  • eyelash extensions,
  • facials,
  • massages, and so on.

Katherine willl usually team up with another local beautician Celine Moreton, in order to facilitate the group and they bring along a bottle of sparkling wine and some juicy strawberries for everyone to enjoy.

A real sex and the city (part one ha ha) night methinks! ideal for a chilled out hen night or first teenage birthday party!!

Katherine was also mentioning that inhousebeauty are offering the brand new Xen Spray Tan only €35 from next week – apparently all the stars are getting it check out www.xen-tan.co.uk for details

She has invested in the spray tent and all the equipment so even if your on holiday down in the sunny south east you can avail of this natural olive based tan in the comfort of your holiday home without getting anything dirty! no tangerines here!!

Other services offered by Katherine and InHouse Beauty include

  • Dermalogica facials only €40,
  • Full body swedish massage – €50,
  • Free Manicure worth €25 with every Pedicure.
  • Eyelash Extensions of course! only €50 ( in dublin they can cost from 100-200 quid!) plus Kat will remove the extensions for you at a later date for free.

So, back to the eyelash extensions. When we were finished I had a look in the mirror and voila! mine eyes , they are beeeuuuatiful!!!    Thanks Katherine.

lashes-by-inhouse-beauty

I highly recommend giving them a go for a fun and long lasting- 1 month apparently! experience. For information on any of the above you can contact Katherine on 087 951 75 81 or via her website:
