Kilcoole Christmas News

SENIOR CITIZEN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY

Over 80 of our Senior Citizens braved the cold and enjoyed another great occasion on Saturday. Santa gave the oldest woman Kitty Quinn and the oldest man Con Hogan their special present, and like the Late Late Show there was one for everyone in the audience. The committee would like to say thanks to all who supports this event each year and we hope to have your continued support in the future. We would like to wish the whole community a peaceful and happy Xmas and a prosperous 2012.

CAMOGIE CLUB NEWS

As the playing season comes to a close, preparations are underway for our Annual Volunteers’ Night Out when we take the opportunity to say thanks to the many people who work to keep the Club in operation during the year. However small you think your contribution may be, we see it as part of the big jigsaw that makes up our Club. We look forward to what should be a great night. Kilcoole Golf Club is the venue and Friday December 16th the date.

We will present the Intermediate Championship medals at this Function and welcome all supporters and friends along – Tickets are 15 Euro each – great value! – available from Billy 0879614487/ Breda 0876998536/ Tracy 0877518680.

Indoor Camogie has now finished and will resume in Colaiste Chraobh Abhann on January 17th.
Hard Luck to Colaiste Chraobh Abhann’s Senior team who departed the Senior Schools Championship at the hands of holders Carnew during the week.
Though playing very well at times, the Kilcoole girls could not match the experience of their opponents at this level. Having done so well to reach the ‘A’ Championship semi-final they have set down a marker for next year’s team! Best of Luck to Carnew who now play Dominican Wicklow in the Final.

Heartiest Congratulations to Fionnuala Britton on her Gold medal Run at the European XCountry Championships on Sunday – a perfectly run race after endless hours, weeks and years of training – well deserved!

Well Done also to Una Britton who made her debut at this level in the U23 race. She performed very well with the best of Europe’s U23 Women and we will see her again on such a stage.

Fionnuala is one of the top 10 Runners currently nominated for European Athlete of the Month – please follow this link and cast your vote for her! www.european-athletics.org/athlete-of-the-month.html. She is currently at the top of the Public vote – but its close!

RTE has confirmed that they will have a film crew visiting the Town on Tuesday Evening and Wednesday, following our victory in round one of The RTE Business Christmas Towns Competition.

NOW EVERYBODY NEEDS TO GET INVOLVED IN THIS POSITIVE INITIATIVE AND DON A TOP HAT OR BONNETT!!!!

We need Your Help!

Wicklow Town has been Shortlisted to feature in The RTE Business Christmas Towns Competition.

This submission was based on the Victorian theme of the Gaol and will reward the winning towns for innovative ideas in getting people into the town to shop locally – WE NOW NEED YOUR INVOLVEMENT!

RTE will be visiting and filming a 30 second piece in all shortlisted towns this weekend and then filming a 2.5 minute piece on the Winning Towns on 19th December.

For Wicklow Town to shine, we need all traders and retailers to get behind this theme and do us proud.

The Chamber will be printing up posters for your windows which you will receive in the coming days and we would all like you to get into the spirit of Victorian Times and hire, beg, borrow or make a Victorian outfit/ Window dressing for this event.

Outfits can be hired for just €25 from Ballina Costume Company (096 72154) and some clever, easy window ideas can be found online.

If you can think of any other ways that we can make this a success, please share it with us to get the whole Town involved.

Christmas…

It’s that time of the year again – Christmas.
Mention Christmas and you get different reactions – mostly good but to me Christmas means –  memories.

I remember ………

I grew up in a big old farmhouse with two sisters.  The house was big and rambling and VERY COLD  in the winter, I was around when there was no central heating brrrr!

Anyway – this Christmas I must have been around 4 or 5 and my sisters were all around a year or two of my age so Christmas was a very magical time for us.  Come Christmas Eve and all us girls and my dad came down the flu – lovely!

My dad  was quite sick and a very bad patient.  My Mom made up beds for all of us in the drawing room downstairs as we had just had a storm and our electricity had gone.
Picture the scene that night as we settled down to sleep………

Because of having no electric light the curtains had been pulled back so that some light could come into the room.  It had snowed during the day and it was a moonlight night and the windows were from floor to ceiling so the light flooded in.  There was a huge fire in the grate and I will always remember watching the mixture of colours on the ceiling, gold from the flames and silvery blue from the light coming in from the windows.

Sometime during the night we heard this tapping on the window and woke up to see this figure at the window.  Great excitement!  Father Christmas had come!  Can you imagine!

I can still hear my little sister howling when she discovered it was only the doctor!
