Ireland’s First Pop Up Civic Museum set to open in Wicklow

This year’s Wicklow Arts Festival which takes place from 24th – 27th May will see an exciting project launched in association with The Wicklow Historical society who celebrate twenty five years of existence, a new and unique Pop Up Civic Museum the first of its type in Ireland will open during the annual festival in Wicklow’s county town.

Speaking about the museum, arts festival spokesperson Geoff Kane stated “This project is a genuine joy to have as part of the festival, the Wicklow historical society have over the last twenty five years produced a huge body of work annotating the rich history of Wicklow, they have worked untold hours and the museum will feature stories that many people may not be entirely familiar with, but will find engaging and inspiring”. Not all of a nation’s history is about the great and the good, and many of the stories will deal with the general populace, how they lived and worked, and their own personal histories.

“We are very lucky in two ways in Wicklow, both from the point of view of living in such a beautiful place and also when we consider the amazing history that is part of it”.

The Museum is still eager for any memorabilia, artefacts or information for inclusion in the display, Stanley O’Reilly of the Wicklow Historical society said “’Wicklow Historical Society is pleased to be associated with the Arts Festival and with the pop up museum. Hopefully one day we will have a permanent museum to call our own. Pop ups have been happening for some time now and why not a museum? It’s a first for the Arts Festival and a first for the Wicklow Historical Society and Wicklow Town. If you have a document, paper, pamphlet or photo you think would be of interest for the museum, please contact the Wicklow Arts Festival at info@wicklowartsfestival.ie or call me at 0404-67494 after five any evening. The museum will be popping up at a space near you during the Wicklow Arts Festival 2012.’
