Wicklows Future Looks Green and Keen

It is a rare but happy day when we get excited here at www.thewicklowway.ie, and today folks is one of those days!!

We have been contacted by two very enterprising groups who have great plans for Wicklow and Indeed Ireland.

First up is the soon to be opened Wicklow Hostel situated along the Moyne section of the infamous Wicklow Way Walk. This is an eco  friendly hostel and I forsee amazing times ahead.

Incidentally they need a bit of volunteer help to get the ‘Earthship Wall’ (? I dunno yet what it is but I am signing up!) built in time for the planned opening ( september 2009) and we will have more info on that very soon.

In the meantime check them out on: www.wicklowhostel.ie

Secondly but no less important is the entreprenurial Grainne Sherlock who basically wants to get more Wicklow businesses involved with discount offers for tourists visiting Ireland. The cards are  bought by tourists via her website in the form of a 20 euro discount card.

She works tirelessly promoting the scheme with her many tourism contacts and you, the wicklow business, get more tourists visiting you and therefore buying your goods! and for you its free.

They buy it for a whole year and can plan their trips to avail of whatever applicable discounts they wish to avail of.

Guys – this is a GREAT idea and she has done all the work for you. All you have to do is make an offer to be included! see  here for more explanation than I can offer!! on her website: www.emeralddiscounts.ie

Grainne has a wealth of experience within the Irish Tourism Industry and has many useful contacts which she is utilising.

This , my friends, Is how to suceed in a recession- join up – its FREE!!!!

Dinner at Bates Rathdrum May Bank Holiday Weekend

What can we say guys? Bates restaurant in Rathdrum got the thumbs up again not only from us humans but from Skippy The Dog too!

The holiday weekend proved an ideal chance to enjoy some of Wicklows finest restaurants and bates restaurant is surely one of these! Myself and a friend headed up to bates on Saturday night to find the restaurant buzzing with a fun atmosphere pervading throughout.

We were welcomed by Alvaro and seated at a  comfortable table with the usual niceties of breads, dips and water to settle us in. ( I ADORE their olive tapenade!!). My friend is a vegetarian and found a good choice of meals to choose from , selecting the gnocchi whilst yours truly elected for the seasonal Lamb.

The whole meal was deliciously cooked by the wonderful Marino and there were small groups, couples, birthday party people and businessmen all enjoying the night.

We later chilled out outside in the cute and pretty cobblestoned lane then headed back home full of yummy food and with a special doggy bag for mr skippy. Needless to say he wolfed it up and says cheers to bates and hopes to see y’all again soon.

Why not check out their videos on their YouTube to get an idea of the restaurant:

A message for John Boorman

A wicklow way reader has sent us in the following request- She is looking for a way to contact John Boorman- film director who lives in county Wicklow. If anyone perhaps sees John for a morning coffee or something (?) maybe they could pass this on to him for us?

Her name is sandra and her contact details are at the end of the piece.

Thaaaanks, Roz and skippy.

Living Life the wicklow way ~ Bringing Community back

Can anyone pass along a note from me to John Boorman? Having recently seen his film with Marcello Mastroianni `Leo the Last`, I am prompted to submit an account of my `take` on London life during the Eighties.

Where can I send it? If he won`t do it perhaps he can refer me to an upcoming director (looking for scripts)?

Thanks,

Sandra

Looking for some ideas for Easter Break?

copy-of-rapeseed-field2main.jpgWhy not take a leaf out of our book and go camping?!! Ireland and especially Wicklow has much to offer the camping / caravanning lover with relatively low rates and much outdoor activities to keep you occupied.

Check out www.camping-ireland.ie for ideas on the camping parks near you in Wicklow such as River Vallery in Redcross Co Wicklow or Hidden Valley Holiday park in Rathdrum Co Wicklow or get outta  Co Wicklow for a while perhaps to nearby Kilkenny for an easter break.

That’s what we have planned anyway, we’re off to Nore Valley park in Bennetsbridge Kilkenny where we’ll take some photos and videos to show you how a novice camper like myself and skippy can enjoy it!!

ciau for now,

Nice to see that a Visit to Glendalough in Wiicklow has been recommended on Twitter as part of the “I Love Ireland” week

The blog www.lecraic.com that likes to keep you up on all the ‘craic’ has nominated Wicklows’ popular tourist attraction as highly recommended to visit on his twitter feed.

Also if your looking for a light hearted blog then try out www.culch.ie for news, comments and general chat on popular culture in Ireland and abroad by Rick O Shea and his gang of blogging mates.

Star Studded Show Friday Feb 27th

Two things, firstly Astronomy Ireland are holding a few star watch events next Friday 27th Feb throughout Ireland, the closet to us probably being in Carlow IT : http://www.astronomy.ie/venusmoon2009(feb).html

These events offer us the chance to view the sky jewels through amazingly high quality telescopes – Indeed when we went to see Jupiter in Roundwood at the star b q last year (?) I was really amazed at the detail.

Many galactic events are taking place (some for the last time in 30 years, some not again until 2012, bringing to mind the Mayan Prophecies methinks!) thus the star watch events taking place.

Secondly have a look at this link, it certainly makes you think!

Rain Rain Go Away, Saturdays Walk Awaits!

Fingers crossed as we closely watch the 3 day forecast with the hope of no rain and perhaps even a bit of sunshine for Saturdays Pre-Valentine Walk in Glendalough with Muddy Matches, and HilltopTreks.

Yours Truly will be there braving the elements to bring you news of the event and meet up with all the like-minded Country Lovin Folks who enjoy the outdoors and have no problem if they ‘happen’ to meet a possible future love interest… hee hee.

There’s whispers of this being documented so skippy is adamant to get his little woofy face up on the big screen. – watch this space, we’ll tell you ALL about it – but hey! why aren’t you coming anyway?

There have been a few new places opened up so why not contact Lucy and Emma and get Living Life The Wicklow Way….

we”ll keep you up to ‘date’ (oh me oh my!) with how its looking!

Currently the weather looks good- bright but cold-

“Isolated wintry showers will trouble northern and northwestern coasts on Saturday but the rest of the country will be dry and largely sunny; temperatures will improve a little and winds will be light but it will still feel rather cold. Another hard frost will set in early on Saturday night under clear skies but rain, preceded by sleet or snow, will arrive in the west and southwest later”

ref- www.met.ie/forecasts/

DO WEAR WARM CLOTHES AND NOT JEANS AND RUNNERS!!!

For information on mountain safety visit the Wicklow Mountains National Park website which is where you will be walking! Click here >>>

See You all Saturday
