Wicklows Future Looks Green and Keen

It is a rare but happy day when we get excited here at www.thewicklowway.ie, and today folks is one of those days!!

We have been contacted by two very enterprising groups who have great plans for Wicklow and Indeed Ireland.

First up is the soon to be opened Wicklow Hostel situated along the Moyne section of the infamous Wicklow Way Walk. This is an eco  friendly hostel and I forsee amazing times ahead.

Incidentally they need a bit of volunteer help to get the ‘Earthship Wall’ (? I dunno yet what it is but I am signing up!) built in time for the planned opening ( september 2009) and we will have more info on that very soon.

In the meantime check them out on: www.wicklowhostel.ie

Secondly but no less important is the entreprenurial Grainne Sherlock who basically wants to get more Wicklow businesses involved with discount offers for tourists visiting Ireland. The cards are  bought by tourists via her website in the form of a 20 euro discount card.

She works tirelessly promoting the scheme with her many tourism contacts and you, the wicklow business, get more tourists visiting you and therefore buying your goods! and for you its free.

They buy it for a whole year and can plan their trips to avail of whatever applicable discounts they wish to avail of.

Guys – this is a GREAT idea and she has done all the work for you. All you have to do is make an offer to be included! see  here for more explanation than I can offer!! on her website: www.emeralddiscounts.ie

Grainne has a wealth of experience within the Irish Tourism Industry and has many useful contacts which she is utilising.

This , my friends, Is how to suceed in a recession- join up – its FREE!!!!

Wicklow Walks – Devils Glen Ashford Co Wicklow

devils-glen-wicklow-06.jpgToday ( Sat 25 April 2009) Myself and Skippy set off for an optomistic ( It won’t rain it won’t) walk in the Devils Glen Woods in Ashford Co Wicklow – Home to the Sculpture in Woodland Project.

Having been there before we knew to expect to see some really gorgeous bluebells  and we were not disappointed! Firstly no rain and secondly the mirage of bluebell carpet as seen in the photo gallery for this page ( click here >>) was truly breathtaking. The gorgeous smells of the bluebells was heavenly.

skippy-devils-glen-09.jpgWe met a good few people enjoying this family friendly wicklow walk- There was a (seriously) yummy mummy with a gaggle of kids and they all seemed to be having a great time, plus some older folks enjoying a picnic at the waterfall. A very adventurous and excitied young springer (dog) came hounding Skippy but he then shot off to muckier lands – much to skippys relief!

devils-glen-ww-stream.jpgWe took a load of photos which are now up on the photo gallery page ( note that we had to make space by deletign some older pics but these will be available on our flickr account very soon ) so you can have  alook and get an idea of what the walk is like. It took us approx 45 mins tho we did push ourselves a bit -  LOL – you can walk for 2 hours if you want to (slowly) and we had a throughly enjoyable afternoon slochign thru the slightly mucky ground.

lost-hat-ashford.jpgYes by the way, usually it is fairly muddy here so wear your wellies or old trainers!! See you around,

p.s. if someone lost their hat its still there!!

After the success of their valentines walk in Glendalough Wicklow, the muddy matches team have organised another fun get-together for country minded single folk over here in Ireland. This time the location is Borris Co Carlow – only a stones throw from Wicklow. They plan 2 events (you can choose one or both) one being a walk and also a  Speeddating event.

The beautiful Blackstairs mountains are the backdrop for this event and for details you should check out the girls site: www.muddymatches.co.uk

If you have any questions about either of the events, please don’t hesitate to get in touch, either by calling the office on +44 (0)1933 311500 or emailing them at customercare@muddymatches.co.uk.

Looking for some ideas for Easter Break?

copy-of-rapeseed-field2main.jpgWhy not take a leaf out of our book and go camping?!! Ireland and especially Wicklow has much to offer the camping / caravanning lover with relatively low rates and much outdoor activities to keep you occupied.

Check out www.camping-ireland.ie for ideas on the camping parks near you in Wicklow such as River Vallery in Redcross Co Wicklow or Hidden Valley Holiday park in Rathdrum Co Wicklow or get outta  Co Wicklow for a while perhaps to nearby Kilkenny for an easter break.

That’s what we have planned anyway, we’re off to Nore Valley park in Bennetsbridge Kilkenny where we’ll take some photos and videos to show you how a novice camper like myself and skippy can enjoy it!!

ciau for now,

Roz and Skippy the dog

These Full Moon Walks are an excellent opportunity to see beautiful landscape by the light of the moon. The walks will be short 3-4 hr walks starting at 7 in the evening during the Winter months.

You will visit some of the most scenic parts of Wicklow in places such as Glendalough, Luggala, Djouce and many more. If you have never had the opportunity to do some nigfht walking then don’t miss this as it’s an altogether different experience.

The next Walk will take place on Sat Jan 10th and we will meet up in Kilmacanogue at the Glencormac Inn car park @ 7pm.

You will have a choice of doing 1 of 2 short walks (depending on numbers ). The walks will take place up and around the greater and smaller sugar loafs. Both walks give excellent panaramic views of the surrounding landscape and eastern coastline.

How to get to Glencormac Inn carpark fronm Dublin. Follow the M50 on to the N11 towards Wexford. Take the turn for Glendalough, Roundwood R767, crossover the bridge acoss the N11 turn right at roundabout after bridge and then right again at next roundabout. The Glencormac Inn is on your left.

All the guides on theses walks are fully qualified and trained so you are in safe hands.

You will also be trained on the skills of night navigation, gain some knowledge of the stars and you could even experience a night time rainbow.

These walks are very reasonable at only €25.
